# contents

Overview

GoalUbuntu Server on the free part of the SSD, Windows untouched
Mediaubuntu-26.04.1-live-server-amd64.iso via Ventoy
Result/ 300 GB ext4 on sda5, shared EFI partition, OpenSSH server

1. Boot the installer

Novo → Boot Menu → EFI USB Device → Ubuntu ISO → Boot in grub2 mode.

2. Installer options

StepChoice
Language / keyboardEnglish / English (US)
Install typeUbuntu Server (not minimized)
NetworkContinue without network (Wi-Fi is configured after install, see Network)
StorageCustom storage layout

3. Create the root partition

In grub2 mode the installer may not list the unallocated space. Create the partition from the installer shell (Help → Enter shell):

shell @ installer
parted /dev/sda unit GiB print free
sgdisk -n 0:0:0 -t 0:8300 -c 0:ubuntu /dev/sda
partprobe /dev/sda
lsblk /dev/sda
  • -n 0:0:0: next free partition number, spanning the largest free block,
  • -t 0:8300: type Linux filesystem,
  • partprobe: re-reads the partition table.

The installer scans disks only at startup, so reboot into the installer again.

4. Storage layout

PartitionSizeUseFormat
sda1200 MB/boot/efi, shared with Windowsno
sda2–sda4~147 GBWindows (MSR, C:, Recovery)–
sda5300 GB/ ext4yes
  1. KINGSTON… → Use As Boot Device (reuses the existing EFI partition).
  2. partition 5 → Edit → Format: ext4, Mount: /.

5. Profile

  • server name homelab,
  • Ubuntu Pro: skip,
  • ✅ Install OpenSSH server,
  • no featured snaps.

After Reboot Now, remove the USB disk.

Verify

shell @ server
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTS /dev/sda

sda5 mounted on /, sda1 on /boot/efi.

Notes

A single / partition instead of LVM and a separate /boot: on a single-disk node it is simpler, and application data goes to the dedicated SSHD.
